Cynthia Adams, Climate Protection Program Coordinator, City of Charlottesville

Cynthia has over decade of experience in the green construction field. A USGBC LEED AP, Cynthia has been a partner in a consulting company for sustainable building, part-owner of a sustainable design showroom, and co-founder of a green design-build construction company. She has helped to manage a wide range of construction projects including private homes, residential development, and mixed-use multi-story buildings. Volunteering with a local nonprofit, she worked to establish an Environmental Advisory Committee in her previous locality to consult with City Council on planning, building code, water quality and supply, and other areas of interest to the community.

Since beginning employment with Charlottesville in October 2008, she has applied her project management and networking skills to developing a community-based climate action strategy for the City and subsequently its Local Energy Alliance Program as a part of that strategy. LEAP will function as central Virginia’s portal for energy efficiency and renewables, championing standards and certifications for quality work, performing quality assurance, providing financing, and public education and outreach.

Daniel Arneman, Environmental Analyst, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Daniel Arneman is an Environmental Analyst at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he works to measure and manage the University's carbon footprint. He holds degrees in Biotechnology and Physiology, but discovered a passion for environmental science through the study of Biomimicry and bio-inspired design. He now strives to apply his training to the fields of renewable energy, green building, and transportation, helping the University to achieve its goal of climate neutrality.

Godfried Augenbroe, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology

Godfried Augenbroe has a 30 year track record of research and teaching in building behavior, building simulation, performance assessment, and energy management. He has advised more than 20 PhD graduates and 60 MS graduates. He directs graduate studies in the High Performance Building program in the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech. He has chaired several international conferences, is associate editor of two scientific journals, has delivered six keynotes at international conferences and has published several books and more than one hundred refereed papers.

Steve Baden, Executive Director, RESNET
Steve Baden has worked in the residential energy efficiency field for over twenty six years, including eighteen years with home energy ratings and energy mortgages on both the state and national levels, and ten years administering a state energy office. Mr. Baden initiated the "Warm Homes for Alaskans Initiative" which received the "1993 National Award for the Most Outstanding State Housing Program" from the National Council of State Housing Agencies. Steve was also awarded "Lifetime Achievement Awards" from the U.S. Department of Energy and RESNET.

Mike Barcik, Senior Technical Director, Southface

Mike Barcik is a senior research engineer and the Director of Technical Services at Southface. His areas of expertise include design reviews, building diagnostics, and energy performance modeling. A graduate from Georgia Tech with a bachelors and masters degree in mechanical engineering, he has previously conducted research in high-efficiency mechanical systems.

With a passion for training, Mike has led thousands of workshops and charrettes on high-performance residential and commercial buildings. He is a RESNET-approved Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Trainer, member of the State of Georgia Energy Code Task Force, ASHRAE member, and a LEED Accredited Professional. He is the only person selected as both a USGBC LEED for Homes and a USGBC LEED - NC Faculty member. Mike lives in Decatur with his much smarter, architect wife Tiffany, two young daughters, and wiener dog in a 1920’s bungalow that they are continuously working on to sustainably improve.

Walter Brown, Senior Vice President of Development and Environmental Affairs, Green Street Properties
Walter Brown is Senior Vice President of Development and Environmental Affairs for Green Street Properties. Building on almost 20 years of real estate and green building experience, Walter leads environmental initiatives for Green Street and manages many of the companys development and zoning responsibilities. Prior to Green Street, Walter was Senior Program Manager of the Southface Energy Institute, where he led key environmental initiatives such as founding the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable, directing the Greenprints Sustainable Development conference, and helping found the Atlanta Regional Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. Prior to Southface, Walter worked for the State of Georgia for ten years, where he was responsible for the rehabilitation of over 5,000 homes for low to moderate-income residents. An Atlanta native, Walter earned a Bachelor of Science in Community Development from Georgia State University, with additional studies at Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. A strong civic leader, Walter currently chairs the Georgia Solar Energy Association and formerly chaired the Moreland Corridor Task Force and the Renewable Energy Action League. He has recently served on the Boards of the Freedom Park Conservancy, the Atlantic Station Project XL Taskforce, the Community Housing Resource Center, and the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable. Walter was also the founding Secretary of the Atlanta Regional Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. He is active in the Candler Park Neighborhood Organization (a past president) and is a former Chair of Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) N. Walter is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Renewable Energy Potential in the Southeast

Kim Cameron, Senior Weatherization Program Manager, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority
Kim Cameron

Kimberly Cameron is the Senior Weatherization Program Manager at the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority. Kimberly has over fifteen years of real estate development, affordable housing, owner occupied rehabilitation and weatherization assistance program experience through Community Development Corporations, private sector developers and nationally known non-profits. She is coordinates project management, contract administration, outreach, and technical assistance to implement the State Weatherization Program. Ms. Cameron provides entrepreneurial leadership in implementing projects, providing technical direction and advice for the development of new contracts. Additionally she generates public support, coordinates partnerships to ensure the goals of the State Weatherization Plan are met.

Ms. Cameron had demonstrated herself insightful before graduation; she was the first African-American woman to receive a Bachelors of Science in Construction Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She obtained her MBA in finance from Concordia University in Wisconsin and soon went on to hold several notable real estate positions: Vice President of Real Estate Development for H.J. Russell & Company; Vice president of Regional Development for Mercy Housing Southeast in Charlotte, North Carolina; large scale development specialist for Habitat for Humanity International and the executive director of the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Development Corporation.

After ten years of experience in the real estate and construction industry, Cameron, again, confirmed she was intuitive when she was the youngest director elected to serve on the national board of the National Association of Women in Construction, in 2000. Currently, Kimberly serves as the Board Chair of DeKalb Habitat for Humanity and the president of the Decatur/DeKalb Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. Additionally she serves on the DeKalb 2010 Census Committee as appointed by DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis. "

New Energy Programs for Georgia

Leesa Carter, Executive Director, USGBC - Georgia Chapter, moderator

As the Executive Director for the U.S. Green Building Council – Georgia Chapter, Carter’s primary responsibility is positioning USGBC-Georgia as a leading educator and advocate for sustainable development and green building across the state.

Under her leadership, USGBC-Georgia has grown to four active Branches in Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and Savannah. It was also chosen to be an Education Delivery Partner exclusively offering National USGBC LEED Workshops in eight states around the Southeast.

Carter has a BA in Communications from Wake Forest University, and executive-level experience in industries ranging from organic products to non-profit management. She serves on the Steering Committee for Atlanta Recycles and on the Turner Foundation’s Green Schools Roundtable.

Green Building Programs: State of the Industry

Michelle Desiderio, Director of Green Building Programs, NAHB Research Center
Michelle Desiderio leads the national green building program based on the ANSI-approved National Green Building Standard (ICC 700-2008). The program certifies single family homes, multi-family buildings, residential renovations, additions, and land development. A related program, Green Approved Products pre-approves certification points for products that meet green building practices.

Michelles housing experience spans environmental, land use, and financing issues. Michelle developed the Smart Commute Mortgage and revamped the Energy Efficient Mortgage.

Michelle has a Masters in Urban Planning and Environmental Studies from the University of Virginia and a BS in Environmental Studies from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Monique Deserres Dipple, Environmental Sustainability Manager, Georgia Southern University
Monique Dipple

Monique Dipple has an extensive background in management and environmental compliance. She has been developing, budgeting, implementing and maintaining high standard in a wide variety of projects including renovations, waste management and maximizing environmental performance. She is the Environmental Sustainability Manager at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. The Office of Sustainability hosted many green events that involved the campus community and drew the attention of regional and national media. Monique has directed the Office of Sustainability since its inception in March 2008.

David Ellis, joined the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association as Executive Vice President in May 2005. He has served over 18 years as an executive with local building industry organizations. David has been recognized by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as the best new Executive Officer in the nation and in 2003 was honored as NAHBs Executive Officer of the Year. He was recently elected as the Vice President of the NAHB Executive Officers Council. He serves as a Board member for HomeAid Atlanta, the Housing Institute, the Livable Communities Coalition, the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership and the Southface Energy Institute. David graduated cum laude from Furman University with a B.A. degree in History.

David Freedman, Principal, Freedman Engineering Group
David Freedman is formerly the Director of Engineering and Construction for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources where he implemented and managed one of the most successful green building programs in the nation. He is currently the Principal at Freedman Engineering Group, a small engineering consulting company that specializes in project management, training, and green building strategies. He is a registered professional Engineer. He is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Faculty where he conducts LEED workshops across the country. The Past is Our Future: Historic Preservation as Sustainable Practice

Gary Garrett, Southern States Energy Board
Gary Garrett is a Senior Technical Analyst for the Southern States Energy Board, involved in energy and environmental policy issues in the southern states. Prior to beginning at SSEB in 2002, he held generation and resource planning positions at Oglethorpe Power for two years, after 27 years with the Tennessee Valley Authority. He has previously participated on committees dealing with electric system reliability assessments and issues in both the Southeast Electric Reliability Corporation (SERC) and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). He serves on the board of the Southeast Energy Society and is a member of IEEE.

He is currently chair of the city of Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board and recently completed a Masters degree in Urban Policy Studies from Georgia State University, in addition to receiving Masters and Bachelors degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington.

David Gipson, Director, Energy Resources Division, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority

David Gipson joined GEFA in February 2008 as the Director of the Division of Energy Resources.

The Division administers the State Energy Program; State Facilities Program; Weatherization Assistance Program; Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant; Governor’s Energy Challege; State Energy Strategy and Fuel Emergency Plan.
David has a Masters of Public Administration in Natural Resource Management from Georgia State University, where he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Disaster Management. He received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Protection from Ball State University, with a minor in energy resources. David is a certified Professional Energy Manager and a board member of the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO).

Prior to coming to GEFA, David was the Assistant Director of the Sustainability Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, where he worked for 10 years. The Sustainability Division is a non-regulatory, technical assistance provider in the areas of water efficiency, solid and hazardous waste reduction and energy efficiency through an environmental management system and recognition approach. Prior to DNR, David spent four years working on solid and hazardous waste management and wastewater issues. "

New Energy Programs for Georgia

David Godfrey, State Utilities Program Manager, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority

David Godfrey has been a part of the GEFA energy team since June, 2006. Overall responsibilities are to manage the team for helping state agencies in the procurement and management of energy resources.

The priority for 2009 is the creation of a new program using federal stimulus funds for energy improvement projects on state-owned facilities. In addition, David is working with state agencies and the private sector to develop legislation enabling energy performance contracting for Georgia state government. Other duties are to establish and maintain a state-wide utility database system to help facilities track and analyze energy usage. In addition, he works with the Department of Administrative Services to manage a natural gas purchasing program for state government. Last, but certainly not least, David provides staff support for the State Facilities Energy Council which was set up by the Governor’s Executive Order to develop recommendations for state agencies to save energy and reduce costs.

Prior to joining GEFA, David worked at the U.S. Department of Energy from 1999 to 2006. He managed the Southeast Region’s Industrial Technologies program developing state coalitions of business, government and academic partners to increase the efficiency and reduce the energy intensity of our top energy-use industries. David also worked in DOE’s Clean Cities and Bioenergy programs.
In other jobs, David worked for Atlanta Gas Light Company specializing in marketing natural gas for vehicles and earlier for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a legislative analyst.

David has a BA degree in Political Science from Georgia State University and a MPA degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia. "

Ervan Hancock, III, Manager of Renewable Development and Green Strategies, Georgia Power
Ervan Hancock is the Manager of Renewable Development and Green Strategies for Georgia Power. In this role he is respon- sible for the development of the companys renewable generation portfolio.

Mr. Hancock earned a bachelors degree in political science and economics from St. Marys College of Maryland in May 1999. A native of Baltimore, he currently resides in Atlanta.

In July 2005, Mr. Hancock was named Manager of Renewable Generation for Southern Company Generation and assistant to the Executive Vice President for Supply Technologies, Renewables and Demand-Side Planning. In these roles, he supported Southern Companys efforts in energy efficiency, renewables and coal gasification.

In April 2008, Mr. Hancock was named Manager of Renewable and Green Strategies for Georgia Power. His responsibilities include setting direction for and overseeing Georgia Powers green energy and renewable research programs.

Throughout his career, Mr. Hancock has managed highly technical (engineering and information technology) programs across Southern Company and the U.S. Department of Defense to achieve critical strategic objectives. He is a graduate of Southern Companys Results by Leadership Program and the companys leadership development programs for Information Technology and Power Generation.

Mr. Hancock serves as Treasurer of the Solar Electric Power Association and as Chair of the Utility Committee of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE). He also serves on the board of Southface Energy Institute.

Building on the knowledge he has developed from 15+ years of work on sustainability within Interface, the US Green Building Council, and other organizations, Jim provides insights, guidance and tools to help companies plan and implement their own technical and cultural transformations.

Matt Hoots, founder and president of the Hoots Group, Inc began his journey towards a green design lifestyle and value system at an early age. As he continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology and became more interested in residential construction, he started to develop an appreciation for advanced building science. Bruce D. Hunn, Director of Strategic Technical Programs , ASHRAE
Bruce Hunn has served as ASHRAEs director of technology since 1997.

He directs staff support of ASHRAEs $3 million per year research program, 90-plus Technical Committees and its 120-plus standards as well as technical services, special projects, such as the Advanced Energy Design Guide series, and code interaction.

Prior to joining ASHRAE, Hunn served as head of the Building Energy Systems Program, Center for Energy Studies, the University of Texas at Austin. There, he directed research programs addressing energy use in buildings, including developing and applying building energy analysis computer programs in the analysis of heating/cooling systems for reduced peak demand and fossil fuel use in buildings. He also developed a building energy standard for the state of Texas and headed a five-year study on energy use patterns in Texas state facilities.

In addition to being an ASHRAE Fellow, he is a Fellow of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). He has held several leadership positions in ASES, including chairman in 1986 and 1987.

Hunn has authored or co-authored more than 105 articles, technical reports and papers, along with eight books or chapters, including Solar Heating Technologies: Fundamentals and Applications.

He has given numerous presentations on topics related to passive solar energy, energy efficiency in buildings, and fabric solar shades for residential and commercial buildings.

He holds a doctorate, a master of science and a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, as well as a bachelor of arts in engineering from the University of Redlands .

Mike Italiano, President and CEO, Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) and
Capital Markets Partnership

Mike is President & Chief Executive Officer for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) and Capital Markets Partnership. He founded these organizations as well as the USGBC, and American Society of Testing & Materials (ASTM) Committee E50 on Environmental Assessment. Mike has been responsible at over 200 waste sites for expert testimony, litigation, cleanup, settlement, and scientific and technical analysis. He is a Director of the Sustainable Furnishings Council.

He has published over 60 articles in the environmental field and authored four environmental books.

He has over 35 years of environmental experience including Senior Analyst in the White House Science Office and Assistant to the Director, National Commission on Water Quality where he helped write the Congressional Report on the Clean Water Act.

He has a B.A. in Physical Geography from Syracuse University, M.S. in Water Resources from the New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and J.D. from George Mason University. He is a member of the Bar in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia."

Green Building Sales and Financing

Ron Jarvis, Vice President of Environmental Innovation, The Home Depot
Ron Jarvis joined The Home Depot in February 1995 as a Product Merchandise Manager of Lumber and Building Materials for the Southeast Division in Tampa, Florida.

In November of 1998, Ron was promoted to Divisional Merchandise Manager responsible for Lumber, Building Materials, Millwork, Plumbing, Kitchen, Fashion bath, Garden and Hardware.

In June of 2000, Ron was promoted to the Environmental, Global Product Manager. In this newly created position, Rons focus was to partner with vendors and merchants across all Home Depot departments companies including International, to develop and enforce our environmental policies.

In July of 2001, Ron was promoted to Merchandising Vice President, responsible for lumber and building materials, his area of responsibility includes vendor selection, retail price points, marketing and in store design for these departments. Ron also had the responsibility for guiding the company on all environmental purchasing policies.

In 2006 Ron was named the VP- Environmental Innovation as a dual role to the merchandising VP position. In this new role Ron is responsible for leading The Home Depots overall environmental sustainability practices and policies, with an emphasis on making The Home Depot the world leader in offering green building products to our consumer and pro customers.

In 2007 Ron was promoted to Senior Vice President of Pro Business, Tool Rental and Environmental Innovation. In this position he oversaw the strategic development and direction of the businesses.He now leads all of The Home Depot sustainability efforts as Vice President of Environmental Innovation/Sustainability and Chairman of the Environmental Council.

Tamara joined Southface in March 2009 as part of the team working on the Sustainable Cities Institute, a project funded by the Home Deport Foundation, which aims to help small- and medium-sized cities across the country make their communities and government operations environmentally sustainable. Prior to working at Southface, Tamara served as Director of Policy & Management Analysis in the Atlanta Mayor’s Office, as Deputy Director of Grants Development in the City of Houston Mayor’s Office, and as Chief of Staff to a City of Houston City Councilmember. She holds a Masters Degree in Political Science from Yale University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Long Island University.

Susan Kidd, Director of Sustainability, Agnes Scott College, moderator
Susan Kidd became the first Director of Sustainability at Agnes Scott College in January 2008, returning to the college where she earned two degrees – a bachelor's degree in history in 1978 and a Master's degree in teaching secondary English in 2007. She served as the first R. Howard Dobbs sustainability scholar-in-residence in Emory University’s Office of Sustainability in 2007 and 2008.

As senior vice president of the Georgia Conservancy from 2002-2006 Kidd managed the staff teams that carried out the Blueprints community planning program and the Teaching Conservation education program. She also worked on projects related to air, water, and land conservation.

She was director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s southern office from1986-1996. A native of Newnan, Kidd returned home in 1996 to coordinate the Georgia Scenic Byways program. In addition to her degrees from Agnes Scott, she received a master’s degree in environmental law from the Vermont Law School in 1983.

Mandy is Director of Sustainability for the City of Atlanta. This initiative is aimed at improving the city’s green programs and policies such as water and energy conservation, reducing our solid waste, reducing emissions, and improving the rates of recycling. Mandy is proud that she was part of the team that launched the BeltLine. Other work experience includes Ahmann, Weeks Properties Group and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Brendan is USGBC’s vice president of LEED® technical development. In this role, Brendan collaborates with volunteer technical committees to evolve and refine USGBC’s LEED Green Building Rating System. During his time at USGBC, Brendan has led development activities for several LEED rating systems including the most recent LEED 2009 technical updates.

Brendan is a member of the ASHRAE/USGBC/IESNA committee developing Standard 189.1 – Standard for High-Performance Green Buildings, is a delegate to the UNEP/SBCI (United Nations Environmental Programme Sustainable Buildings & Construction Initiative) Think Tank on Benchmarking Sustainable Buildings and represents USGBC on the steering committee for the Advanced Energy Design Guide series. Sam Rashkin has managed ENERGY STAR for Homes since its start in 1996.  Under his leadership, ENERGY STAR for Homes has grown exponentially to more than 6,500 builder partners and over 940,000 labeled homes. He is also introducing a new EPA Indoor Air Quality label for the housing industry linked to ENERGY STAR Qualified Homes and an advanced technology new home program called Climate Choice for elite builders. Mr. Rashkin received his Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University; completed Masters of Urban Planning studies at New York University; and is a registered architect in California and New York.  During his 20-plus years as a licensed architect, he specialized in energy efficient design and completed over 100 residential projects.  He has served on the national Steering Committees for USGBC’s LEED for Homes, NAHB’s Green Builder Guidelines, and U.S. EPA’s Water Sense label. Bob Reedy has been Solar Energy Division Director at the Florida Solar Energy Center since early 2007.

Previously, he served Georgia Transmission Corporation as Research Manager and as Manager of Transmission Line Design. Earlier experience includes leadership and technical roles for Turbec AB (microturbines), The Energy Authority, Inc. (wholesale electric energy) and Lakeland Electric Utilities, rounding out his energy industry experience. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Florida and Georgia.

Mr. Reedy is now involved with the “smart grid” aspects of photovoltaic systems. Other interests include optimization of PV optical and thermal designs, thermoelectric-photovoltaic combinations and solar water heating.

Dennis Scanlin, Professor and Co-founder of ASUs Sustainable Development Program, Appalachian State University
Dr. Dennis Scanlin is a Professor in the Technology Department at Appalachian State University and is the Coordinator of the Appropriate Technology Program. He was a co-founder of ASUs Sustainable Development Program, and has a long history of involvement with sustainable development and energy technology issues and activities. He has published numerous energy-related articles; developed and taught courses and workshops focusing on a wide variety of renewable energy and green building technologies; and has designed and constructed residential-scale hydro, wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal systems. He currently teaches courses related to renewable energy resources and technology at Appalachian State and directs several renewable energy related activities in the region, including: an anemometer loan program in western North Carolina for wind resource assessment; a DOE-funded project to assess the feasibility of utility-scale wind-produced electricity in North Carolina; the Western North Carolina Small Wind Initiative, a small wind turbine research and demonstration facility on Beech Mountain and the Western NC Renewable Energy Initiative. Scanlin is the lead DOE liaison for wind issues and outreach in North Carolina and is the coordinator of North Carolinas Wind Working Group. He has organized and or conducted over 25 renewable energy related workshops and conferences in the last four years.

John Sibley, a lawyer by training, has worked on public policy throughout his career. His roles have included counsel to committees of the Georgia Senate, director of the Governors Growth Strategies Commission, and board member of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. In 1998, John became president of the Georgia Conservancy, an environmental advocacy organization. Since retiring from that role in 2005, he has focused on energy issues in Georgia and the Southeast, particularly energy efficiency. David Skelton, Vice President Investments Operations, Gables Residential
Daves role with Gables Residential is to support the Investments group on a national level as Gables has operations in 7 markets in the US. His responsibilities include review of monthly reporting to ensure accuracy and consistency, and to help coordinate special projects such as the Sustainable Development effort.

Dave began working for Trammel Crow Residential (TCR) in 1989 as a Project Manager and in 1994 the Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston divisions broke off from TCR to form Gables Residential as a public REIT. Robin is the Program Director for the Building Codes Assistance Project. Previously, she worked for sixteen years at U.S. EPA headquarters in Washington, DC where she specialized in state and local implementation of voluntary programs in climate, green buildings, deconstruction, and smart growth. While at EPA, she helped to create, launch, and implement a number of national environmental programs including the Smart Growth Network and Best Workplaces for Commuters. Robin has hands-on experience with both state and local government. She worked for the State of Maryland and, in 2007, she took a year off from running national programs to work for the City of Washington, DC. She led initiatives to "green government buildings and conduct energy audits of government facilities, along with developing a carbon emissions inventory, a climate change action plan, and a climate change resiliency plan for the City.

Eurihea Speciale has over two decades of experience in the residential construction industry, and a residential renovation contractor for 14 years, he is responsible for managing the Southface Energy Rated Homes Providership and providing quality assurance for the Southface residential programs.

Eurihea earned a BBA in Real Estate from Georgia State University in 2005 and attended Syracuse University as a Construction Management undergrad. Dr. John Straube, Master Speaker, Building Science Corporation
John F. Straube, Ph.D., P.Eng., is a specialist building science engineer, consultant, researcher, and educator involved in the areas of building enclosure design, moisture physics, and whole building performance.

He is a founding Principal of the consulting firm Building Science Consulting and is also a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) where he teaches courses in structural design, material science and building science to both disciplines. Energy-efficient, healthy, durable and sustainable building designs are a general goal of his research which is often supported by advanced computer simulation, laboratory testing and full-scale natural exposure performance monitoring.

Dr. Straube has consulted to many major building product manufacturers, government agencies (CMHC, NRC/IRC,UN, NRCan, DOE, EPA), and a range of design professionals and building owners. Ben Taube currently serves as the Executive Director of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) which is a nonprofit headquartered in Atlanta, GA with a mission to deploy energy efficiency across 11 southeast States. The organization is comprised of public and private interests.

Prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, Ben served as the Public Affairs Manager for the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute where he was responsible for planning, coordinating, and communicating GREENGUARD's activities, capabilities, goals, and priorities to a variety of audiences. Ben also worked as the Director of Government Affairs for EcoSMART Technologies. Prior to EcoSMART, Ben served as the Environmental Manager for the City of Atlanta with the responsibilities of developing and enhancing environmental initiatives and policy. Ben is Chair of the Atlanta Chapter of the USGBC; Vice Chair of the Georgia Chapter of the the USGBC; 2008 Recipient of the Atlanta Business Chronicle 40 under 40 leaders; task force member for the city of Chamblee, GA greenbuilding ordinance; member of the Atlanta Regional Commission 50 Forward Initiative; and serves on the Board of the Green Chamber of the South; Board of Directors of the American Israel Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Conservation Voters.

Paul Torcellini, Ph.D., P.E., National Renewable Energy Laboratory / Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC
Paul Torcellini is the Principal Group Manager for Commercial Buildings Research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a DOE national laboratory. Paul has been at NREL for 14 years. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Colorado School of Mines and Denver University.

An expert in the energy performance of commercial buildings, Dr. Torcellini has extensive experience using computer simulations to design very low-energy buildings. He manages commercial buildings research at NREL, including teams responsible for developing next generation simulation capabilities and advanced monitoring of buildings.

Among many awards, Dr. Torcellini received two ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Technology Awards for his high-performance buildings work, two Energy User News magazine Efficient Building Awards, and a 2000 NREL Staff Award for Outstanding Community and Professional Service. He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles, reports, and papers, and a frequent speaker in a range of venues, including events sponsored by ASHRAE, the American Institute of Architects, ACEEE (American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy), and the National Building Museum.

Dr. Torcellini earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Purdue University, specializing in passive solar design and commercial building controls.

Susan M. Turner is a principal in the Historic Preservation Studio at Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architecture. She is responsible for setting the direction for a wide variety of projects, which include a range of pre-design, architectural and construction phase services. She specializes in architectural restoration and rehabilitation services to wide variety of clients, including the National Park Service, General Services Administration, institutions of higher education and private non-profits.

Howard S.Wertheimer, Director of Capital Planning and Space Management, Georgia Institute of Technology
Howard S. Wertheimer, AIA, LEED AP, is the Director of Capital Planning & Space Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he has strategic oversight of the Campus Master Plan, Landscape Master Plan, campus-wide sustainability initiatives and most things that are visually exposed.

Prior to joining Georgia Tech in November 2006, Mr. Wertheimer was a principal at Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architects where he focused on the planning, programming and design of technically sophisticated college and university facilities.

After attending SUNY at Alfred, Howard earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and Master of Architecture degree from Georgia Tech. He is a frequent lecturer and has been an active participant in numerous community and professional organizations.

WicksteadWorks is consistently selected as one of Atlanta's Top 25 Remodelers by The Atlanta Business Chronicle. They have been nominated as one of the 2010 Big50 by Remodeler Magazine. Frank considers his partnership with the EarthCraft Program to be a key part of his successful marketing plan.

Alex Wilson, Master Speaker, Founder, Building Green LLC
Alex Wilson is founder of BuildingGreen, LLC, of Brattleboro, Vermont, and executive editor of Environmental Building News) and the GreenSpec Directory. He is author of Your Green Home (2006), co-author of the Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings (ACEEE, 9th edition, 2007), and an instructor with Boston Architectural Colleges online Certificate in Sustainable Design program. Alex served on the national board of the U.S. Green Building Council from 2000 through 2005 and currently serves on their Research Committee; in 2008 he received the USGBC Leadership Award for Education. Alex is also a trustee of The Nature Conservancy Vermont Chapter.

Jennifer Wilson, State Energy Program Manager, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority
Jennifer Wilson joined the State Energy Program at GEFA in January of 2009, and recently took on the role of State Energy Program Manager. She oversees various grant programs underneath both the State Energy Program and the newly formed Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in the public and private sector.

Prior to joining GEFA, she was the program director for environmental sustainability at CIFAL Atlanta, a United Nations-affiliated training center for local government officials. She holds a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Georgia.
